Recent field surveys of the flora of Niue have identified three new species records for the island. Erigeron bellioides DC. (Asteraceae) and Psidium cattleyanum Sabine (Myrtaceae) are new naturalised records and Crepidomanes saxifragoides (C.Presl) P.S.Green (Hymenophyllaceae) is an addition to the indigenous flora.

Ocean Outlook, fortnight to 25 April: • Sea surface temperature (SST) forecasts more than 0.8°C above normal are favoured in the following country EEZs: Palau, northern CNMI, southern Line Is. (Kiribati), most of PNG, western and south Solomon Is., central and southern Vanuatu, western and southern New Caledonia, northern Tonga, Niue, southern A. Samoa, southwest Cook Is., north and parts of south French Polynesia. SST anomalies above 1.2°C are favoured in southern parts of PNG, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and southern French Polynesia. Nauru and western Kiribati are forecasted to have SSTs cooler than -0.4°C. Elsewhere, SSTs are predicted to be near-normal.

The Cook Islands are leading efforts to reduce plastic pollution, as reported to the second session of a UN commission on plastic waste. Since 2012, they’ve enforced single-use plastic bans and promoted zero-waste strategies. They joined 12 other Pacific nations in advocating for a strong, legally binding global plastics treaty. Domestically, the Cook Islands are drafting new laws to ban items like plastic straws and polystyrene containers and will introduce disposal fees to reduce waste. They also received $3 million in international funding to develop circular economy solutions such as reuse and eco-design.

This nearly 70-page EIA, prepared for the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), investigates the Ok Tedi copper–gold mine’s impact on Papua New Guinea’s Fly–Ok Tedi River system. It reveals that approximately 80,000 tonnes of ore-processing residues—plus comparable volumes of waste rock and overburden—are discharged into the headwaters daily en.wikipedia.org+6library.sprep.org+6pacific-data.sprep.org+6 . Over decades, this dumping has elevated river beds, causing altered flow patterns, severe flooding, and erosion of nearby croplands and forests. The report traces the spread of trace metals throughout the floodplain, assessing sediment metal concentrations and ecological risk. It highlights widespread environmental degradation: deforestation, reduced aquatic biodiversity, and polluted agricultural soils. These impacts threaten both ecosystems and the livelihoods of downstream communities, while also raising broader concerns about sustainable mining and the need for environmental safeguards in the Pacific.
