Contribution of marine conservation agreements to biodiversity protection, fisheries management and sustainable financing in Fiji

The marine environment is a vital resource for Fiji's tourism, yet industry and community efforts to conserve and improve it have largely gone unrecognised, and are under-utilised in Fiji's tourism marketing. The Wildlife Conservation Society and Marine Ecology Consulting conducted a study between 16 March and 30 October 2017 to document the degree and scale to which Marine Conservation Agreements (MCAs) are being used in coastal waters in Fiji, and what contribution they are making to biodiversity conservation, fisheries management and sustainable financing. The study focuses on partnerships involving local communities with land-sea tenure rights and the tourism sector. It concentrates on the experiences and perceptions of the tourism sector, some of whom are local operators and resource owners. Documenting the motivations and opinions of the community resource owners was outside the scope of this study, and could usefully form the basis of a companion study to better understand their perceptions and commitment to the MCAs, and the direct and indirect benefits they receive.

The National Environment Sector Plan (NESP) Samoa : 2017-2021

The NESP 2017-2021 updates the NESP 2013-2016. It is based on the most recent State of the Environment assessment documented in 2013, lessons learned from the previous NESP and outcomes of the Sector SWOT Analysis which was conducted as part of the NESP review and update process. The NESP articulates the roadmap for the Environment Sector for the period 2017 - 2021. It outlines the sector's vision, goal and an achievable framework for action, in line with the Strategy for the Development of Samoa (SDS) 2016-2020, the sector policy and legislative framework and regional and international obligations. The framework consists of 4 long term outcomes under which 15 end of sector plan outcomes will be pursued.

Vanuatus biodiversity remains poorly known, with detailed studies of only a few genera and few studies of the biota of smaller or less accessible islands. However a review of studies of the flora and fauna of Vanuatu has shown that there are endemic species, rare species and uncommon variants within many of the genera that have been studied in detail. Much of Vanuatus diversity beneath the species level has only been classified by indigenous knowledge systems that vary from one language group to another and are not documented.

Herbicidal control of bridal creeper (Asparagus asparagoides) in an ecologically sensitive environment

Asparagus asparagoides (bridal creeper) is a highly invasive noxious environmental weed in southern Australia. It poses a severe threat to biodiversity and conservation in temperate natural ecosystems. Pterostylis arenicola, a threatened terrestrial orchid endemic to South Australia, is directly imperilled by this weed in most of its remnant populations. The coincident growth phenologies of orchid and weed make for an ecologically sensitive environment when considering methods of weed control or eradication. To minimise impact on the orchid and its ecosystem, this paper examines the efficacy of herbicide application for A. asparagoides control using the weed wiping technique, comparing it to the conventional spray application method. The most prolonged control of A. asparagoides was achieved after a single wipe-application of 1.5 g a.i. (active ingredient) L 1 metsulfuron methyl, either alone or in combination with 120 g a.i.L 1 glyphosate, both treatments giving significantly better weed control five years after treatment than comparable spray applications. An investigation of the effect of glyphosate on cultures of the mycorrhizal fungus isolated from P. arenicola indicated a significant decline in mycelial growth with increasing herbicide concentration over the range 0.53.0 kg a.i. ha 1. These results provide further incentive for the use of ecologically sensitive herbicide application techniques, such as weed wiping, in areas of high conservation concern.

Our Pacific island region is rich and diverse in its culture, languages and traditions. Despite this diversity, Pacific peoples have something in common we belong to the largest ocean on planet Earth, which covers more than 169 million square kilometres, we maintain a strong reliance on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity for sustainable development, for daily livelihoods and for preserving our cultural practices. But perhaps the most important common feature we share is that we are a region of ocean state islands. In 2006, the Island Biodiversity Programme of Work (IBPOW) was adopted at the eighth Conference of Parties (COP) of the Convention on Biological Diversity to address the uniqueness and fragility of island biodiversity and it provides guidance on priorities for biodiversity management in small island developing states, including the application of ecosystem approaches to management.
