Operational Plan for a Pilot Programme for the Management of Feral Pigs on Niue Island. With recommendations for enhanced management of domestic pigs

Feral and wandering domestic pigs collectively cause significant environmental damage in Niue, chiefly to coconut crab populations and to seedling coconuts. They also cause significant economic damage to plantations and domestic gardens. Feral pig eradication on Niue Island would be difficult to achieve and impossible to maintain in the current scenario of domestic pig management. Pig management practices vary from adequate to laissez faire, with constant escape and release from sites. This is due to lack of quality pig sty construction and difficulty for most pig owners in maintaining regular pig watering and feeding. Domestic pigs interact with feral pigs and contribute both to the feral herd and in damage to crops and the environment.

Onotoa Island Myna Management Report

This report is based on official trip made to Onotoa early this year 2014. IAS project under ECD together with ALD from MELAD was made to fulfill the obligation of ECD as an implementing agency. In 2012, there is a survey trip made to confirm the distribution and number of myna birds on Onotoa in order to set up appropriate actions to cease the disturbances and destruction caused by this bird. Thus, the programs of this trip are to educate the locals on how to construct myna (mynah) bird traps and to encourage instinctive knowledge for eradication using their own resources and conduct an outreach program on inter-island bio-security role. This report therefore will highlight activities, findings and data update on numbers, challenges and recommendations that will aim to improve upcoming responses.

Invasive species are a major global threat to biodiversity and Pacific Islands are particularly vulnerable due to their isolation and relatively recent human occupation. Their native species often cannot cope with predation or competition from new arrivals. Niue already suffers from the impact of invasive species that have arrive in the country. However there are many more devastating species that are not present but found in other countries of the region and every effort needs to be made to prevent their arrivals.
