African Tulip in Rarotonga and the use of biological control

Benefits of biocontrol is cost, and they usually do the work for you in the long term. The African tulip was quickly colonizing forests in Rarotonga and would easily outnumber native plants, so bio-control was recommended to be used for the Tulip to be controlled. The gall mite was then introduced in 2016 and in 2021, the black flea beetle and now biocontrol methods are one of the leading ways to Climate Resilience in the Cook Islands

Assault on the Sepik River (PNG) - Salvinia molesta

From the Archives of the 1980's - Salvinia molesta entered the mighty Sepik River in Papua New Guinea in the 1970's. The communities nearby relied heavily on the Sepik River for communication, transport and food but soon the Salvinia became a menace and clogged water intakes and fouling propellers of outboard motors. However in 1979, the small black weevil which became the perfect candidate for biological control as it fed only on the Salvinia and in 1982 the weevil was released and became the solution for the Salvinia-infested waters.

27 May 2022 - Invasive weeds are a serious problem we need to deal with in the Pacific if we need to build community resilience to climate change. In this video, we showcase the impacts of Tamaligi during natural disasters and extreme weather events in Samoa, as well as devil's ivy (taro vine) on the forest ecosystems of Niue, highlighting the linkage between invasive species management and building climate resilience in the Pacific.

Samoa officially rekindles its fight against invasive species by incorporating the NENS programme into its management efforts to control widespread invasive weeds in the country. Samoa joins the likes of Cook Islands, Tonga and Niue focusing initially on two invasive weeds, African tulip tree (Spathodea campanulata) and Koster’s curse (Clidemia hirta), with more target weeds forthcoming such as the tamaligi.
