The current national target for protected areas (which is inclusive of both marine and terrestrial) is 10% for each of the 3 island groups that make up Kiribati – ie 10% Gilbert Group, 10% Line Group, and 10% the Phoenix group. Site based conservation is one of the most important and successful tactics for reducing global biodiversity loss. Governmental commitments to site conservation include Kiribati’s Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (K-NBSAP), which commits Kiribati to meeting the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) Achi goals of 10% land and marine conservation by 2020. Government of Kiribati is a CBD signatory which enjoins Parties to establish “a system of protected areas or areas where special measures need to be taken to conserve biological diversity”.

The Fifth national report (NR) updates the progress of the 4th National Report specifically highlighting the importance of biodiversity, its trends and status drawing on several case studies that are significant to Kiribati. The report also highlights common threats to the biodiversity in Kiribati, mainstreaming of biodiversity into national policies and plans. Lastly the report highlights the national achievements in relation to NBSAP as well as discussing national targets and actions that are relevant in achieving the global targets (AICHI TARGET).

The Ministry of Environment, Lands and Agricultural Development (MELAD) has received funds through the regional GEF-PAS Invasives project coordinated by the Secretariat for the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to eradicate two species of myna found in Kiribati. The Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) and the Jungle Myna (A. fuscus) are two of the world’s most destructive invasive species, originally from Asia. They damage food crops such as papaya and breadfruit, attack native birds, nest in the roofs of houses where they make a mess with their droppings, are very noisy, and can carry diseases and parasites.

The Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) is currently executing the project Reducing Vulnerability in Pacific ACP States with funding from the European Development Fund (EDF). The project has the objective to reduce Pacific ACP States' vulnerability to natural disasters affecting their coasts through the development of an integrated planning and management system which targets: hazard mitigation and risk assessment; alternative sources of aggregates for construction; and water resources and sanitation. Major activities undertaken through this project with participating countries are: -assessment of aggregate resource supplies to mitigate the impact of unsustainable aggregate mining from the coastline; -development of bathymetric maps, 3D bathymetric and hydrodynamic models spatial databases relating to resource use, exploration and survey, and vulnerability to disasters; and -investigating and raising awareness about coastal processes.

A Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded project is currently being implemented in Kiribati titled the "Prevention, Control and Management of Invasive Alien Species in the Pacific Islands". This is a multicountry project and includes the Niue, Federated States of Micronesia, Cook Islands, Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Palau Tonga and Samoa. Activities within the framework of this project include the conservation of priority species and ecosystems and the management of invasive alien species. Please see Table 1 below for list of key deliverables identified by the Government of Kiribati.
