The small Island country Fiji has an articulated agricultural knowledge system with private and public institutions. The agricultural research and extension departments of the Ministry of Agriculture are the focus of this study. A participatory action research methodology was used to investigate the potential of participatory methods and to improve information flows between fanners and the Ministry in order to achieve a systematic Integration of farmers' problems into the knowledge system. Furthermore, the potential of platforms in improvement of the efficiency of work in the Ministry was studied

Gold mining is often associated with positive economic benefits; however, it may also have negative impacts on the environment and human health. It is essential that communities understand the risks and benefits associated with mining, particularly in developing countries where there is often a lack of legislation governing the environmental performance of mining corporations. The perceptions of local people regarding the risks and benefits of mining may differ significantly from those of company representatives, policy makers, and the scientific community. Indeed, public concerns have sometimes been ignored or downplayed by those responsible for the implementation of environmental policies and practices. Examination of the complex social, economic, psychological, political, and cultural factors influencing risk perception in mining communities is thus important for successful risk communication and management.

The objective of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is “to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought in countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification”. In Fiji’s context, her obligation is related to combating land degradation and mitigating the effects of drought. Since ratification of the Convention in August 26th 1998, Fiji has complied with all reporting obligations between years 2000 and 2007. The review of Fiji’s Land Conservation and Improvement Act is underway, which together with implementation of the Rural Land Use and Forest policy will address emerging issues on land degradation and drought

The Capacity Development workshop of NCSA project for biodiversity, climate change and combating desertification (land degradation) was held on the 29-30th July 2008 at the Southern Cross Hotel, Suva organized by the Department of Environment, Ministry of Local Government. Housing. Urban Development and Environment, Government of Fiji. The workshop was attended by over 26 participants comprising of representatives from state Government, International NGOs and International Organizations.

At the first World Climate Conference (WCC), in 1979, Scientists began to express anthropogenic influence for increasing concern over the rising emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere affecting global climate. In light on this, the United Nations General Assembly in 1988 agreed to a resolution, to protect global climate for present and future generations of mankind. "Two years later, in 1990, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution, formally launching negotiations on a climate change convention. In May 1992, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) text was adopted and the Convention opened for signature in June at the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro The UNFCCC entered into force in March 1994 (Fisher E, 2004). Fiji signed the convention at its launch in 1992 and ratified it in 1993.
