Fiji and other Pacific Island Countries face a high risk of communicable disease outbreaks caused by endemic, emerging and re-emerging disease, which are influenced by social, economic and ecological changes.

The focus on biodieversity and conservation is recognition of protecting and conserving biodiversity and sustainably managing living natural resources are fundamental to sustainable development.

This new Pacific islands framework for nature conservation and protected areas 2021-2025 was endorsed during the conference and subsequently at the 30th SPREP Meeting by 26 members countries and territories in 2021. It reflects the urgent need for transformative action in response to the multiple accelerating threats, both established and emerging, that are faced by nature and people in the Pacific.

The PD defines CA's as "generally large (relative to the island(s) on or around which they are established), diverse geographical units which contain important features for the conservation of the biological diversity of the region or country. Most will encompass a variety of land and resource uses. Conservation areas will be managed according to agreed criteria for the conservation of biological resources and sustainable community development which is ecologically compatible."

The new Framework will provide guidance for the region on key priorities for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management for the next six years with clear linkages to the global Aichi Biodiversity Targets and National Biodiversity Strategy and Acion Plans. climate-sensitive development sectors: coastal zone management, food security and food production, and water resources management. The programme began in 2009 and is scheduled to end in December 2014.
