Habitat degradation: Seagrasses, coral reefs, and mangrove ecosystems face degradation stemming from coastal development, deforestation, sedimentation, and unsustainable use. Climate change and invasive species: Rising sea levels and temperature increase stress marine ecosystems. Invasive species further destabilize native biodiversity and fish stocks. Policy and capacity gaps: Although Fiji is party to major environmental agreements, enforcement and systematic marine monitoring remain inadequate. Collaborative solutions: The report calls for strengthened coordination among UN agencies, SPREP, Fiji’s government, and Australian partners. Recommendations include expanding coastal climate-change observation, improving environmental education, enhancing marine pollution legislation, and bolstering community-based conservation efforts. Together, these insights emphasize that raising environmental awareness and fostering regional cooperation—especially with Australia—are vital to protecting Fiji's marine environment and achieving sustainable development goals.

Kokusai Kogyo Company Limited (KKCL), the client, has engaged SCOPE Pacific (SPL) to conduct the Waste & Composition Survey (WACS) as part of The Japanese Technical Cooperation Project for Promotion of Regional Initiative on Solid Waste Management in Pacific Island Countries Phase 2 This report included the following:  pre-survey questionnaire to collect basic household data, concerns and perceived disposal patterns.  Waste collection, segregation & weighing  Data analysis The purpose of the study was to obtain household solid waste data of present amount and composition from participants in the two cities in The Republic of Fiji Islands - Suva and Lautoka. The results of the survey are to be used by the client to understand the waste flows in both Suva and Lautoka; and to use as a nationwide baseline for household solid waste flows.

The Government of Fiji has advocated the "coexistence of a sustainable society and the environment" as one of its basic policies. Furthermore, in June 2008, the government published its “National Solid Waste Management Strategy and Action Plan, 2008 – 2010” which aims to minimize waste, establish appropriate solid waste management (SWM) and reduce their environmental footprint. To achieve these basic policies, the Fiji Government has conducted a “Waste minimization and recycling promotion project” from October 2008, working out of the Lautoka City Council (LCC) and Nadi Town Council (NTC). The Department of Environment (DOE) decided to move ahead with waste minimization and recycling nationwide by promoting the 3Rs while building a sustainable Solid Waste Management (SWM), as stated in the National SWM Strategy 2011 – 2014 which was revised strategy endorsed by cabinet in 15th August, 2011. Therefore, the DOE prepared this 3R Guideline as a national policy to promote 3Rs.

The objective of the Fiji International Waters Project Fiji (IWPFJ) is to identify cost- effective ways to strengthen the management of solid and liquid waste in Fiji's rural communities. The Fiji IWP is managed by the Ministry of Local Government, Housing, Squatter Settlement and Environment in collaboration with the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

The implementation of a robust pesticide and chemical management system is critical particularly aspects relating to chemical Analysis Service and Licensing, Compliance and Monitoring and use of chemical for pesticide. To sustain agricultural production, the use of agriculture chemical for plant protection and pesticide use is inevitable to maintain increasing production. The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) through the Research Section has ensured that chemicals used are properly analysed through proper quality control process before approval is given for public use.
