The Regional Seas programme of UNEP commenced in 1974 and since that time considerable advances have been made in the development of regional action plans and conventions for the protection of the marine and coastal areas of some eleven regions world- wide. Following these developments UNEP has encouraged inter-regional co-operation in addressing various issues of environmental concern through the organisation of international meetings and inter-regional symposia. This volume contains the record of one such symposium, held in Vina del Mar. Chile in association with the VI Inter-Congress of the Pacific Science Association.

This report is the Project Preparation Document (PPD) for the proposed Funafuti Marine Conservation Area. The primary objective of the PPD is to lay out the design for a project that conserves a representative sample of the marine and terrestrial biodiversity typical of Funafuti atoll, and of Tuvalu as a whole. A long term objective is to develop regimes for the sustainable management of the inshore fisheries resource, a resource currently threatened by over-utilisation.

A CP was prepared by the Native Lands Conservation and Preservation Projects Steering Committee (NLCPPSC), chaired by the Native Lands Trust Board (NLTB), and submitted to SPBCP in November 1993 for the Koroyanitu National Park Project. The CP was reviewed by the SPBCP Technical and Management Advisory Group (TMAG) in February 1994 and approved for preparation suggesting further attention to some issues.
