Over the past five years RARE Center has allocated more than US$ 500,000 to funding its Conservation Education Campaigns throughout the English-speaking Caribbean. Now active in twelve countries (Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Dominica, Montserrat, The Cayman Islands, The Bahamas,Grenada, Belize, Jamaica, Nevis, Tobago and Anguilla) they, have reached out to more than 1.25 million people.

There is a growing concern in Western Samoa over environmental issues, and a growing under- standing of the need for economic development to be properly planned in order to take environ- mental constraints into account. Such an integra- tion of environment and development is generally referred to as sustainable development. It is a new thrust in die pursuit of an acceptable and dignified level of social well-being, and the primary focus of global development efforts today.

This report presents the results of an ifilele (Intsia bijuga) timber inventory of the Uafato Conservation Area (CA) on Upolu island, Samoa. It provides data on which to base recommendations for the sustainable management of ifilele in the CA. The inventory included a three week field survey of ifilele and a shorter community survey of ifilele harvesting practices in the conservation area.

This Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for International Waters of the Pacific Islands Region was initiated and developed by the thirteen Pacific island states participating in the work of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). It represents a pioneering effort by our group of small island developing states (SIDS) to integrate our national and regional sustainable development priorities with shared global environmental concerns for protecting International Waters.
