Mangrove ecosystems plays an extremely important role in our communities because of the goods that they provide in the production of wood for fuel and construction, the invertebrates and finfish for subsistence and commercial fisheries but also the services provided in coastal protection from storm surges, bio-remediation, sediment trapping and carbon sequestration in mangrove soils mitigating climate change.

This Used Oil Management Plan aims at introducing and implementing a Used Oil Stewardship System in Vanuatu.

The purpose of this report is to provide Wan Smolbag Theatre’s (WSB) Vanua-Tai Turtle Monitors Network and partners with a summary of tagging and nesting information that has been submitted to SPREP for incorporation into the regional Turtle Research and Monitoring Database System (TREDS). This report also aims to provide information that can be used to assist turtle conservation work carried out in Vanuatu.

This report covers the Vanuatu component of a project involving waste oil audits in Fiji and Vanuatu to establish volumes of hydraulic and lubricating oils imported annually into these countries and to confirm the volumes of waste oil produced, stored or otherwise disposed. The work was carried out by Contract Environmental Ltd under a contract to the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), with funding provided by the French Development Agency. Most of the information required for the audit was obtained in a country visit to Vanuatu which took place from 22 to 26 October 2012 and was organised through the Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation (DEPC). There are two major suppliers of lubricating and hydraulic oil in the country and a number of other minor suppliers. Based on Customs’ import data, the total imports of lubricating and hydraulic oil are around 750,000 L per year.

The regionally unique Constitution of the Republic of Vanuatu provides that ―all land in Vanuatu belongs to custom owners and their descendants‖ and that the ―rules of custom shall form the basis of ownership and use of land.‖1Implementing this principle, however,after decades of land alienation by foreign ersusing alien laws has proven to be challenging. Concerns over actual and perceived problems of land alienation through leasing in Vanuatu triggered a National Land Summit in 2006,2followed by an Interim Transitional Implementation Strategy and a National Land Review, all of which set the stage for a legislative and administrative reform agenda and served as a guide to short-and long-term assistance to the land sector.

This document presents a National Plan for the Implementation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Republic of Vanuatu. Vanuatu signed the Convention on May 21, 2002 and ratified it on September 16, 2005 after the Convention had come into force on 17 May 2004.Vanuatu has since ensured its national and international commitments to the Convention by working towards adhering to its recommendations and mandates. In order for POPs to be removed in 2008 under the POPs in PICs project, Vanuatu had to ratify the Waigani Convention. Therefore in 2005, Vanuatu signed the Waigani Convention and ratified it in June 2008. This enabled neighboring countries to aide us in the removal of POPs at the end of 2008.
