This brief presents a review of lessons learned and good practices in developing management plans within the context of community based resource management (CBRM) in Solomon Islands. The lessons are based on work done by the WorldFish Center, the Foundation of the Peoples of the South Pacific International (FSPI) and the Solomon Islands Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources. The document is intended to complement other initiatives in the country and through the Solomon Islands Locally Managed Marine Area Network add to lessons learned by other organizations in order to help the people and the government of the Solomon Islands meet their marine resource management goals.

A workshop on the assessment of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus). with the Solomon Islands as a case study, took place from 21-23 August 2008 in Apia. Samoa. It was planned and organized under the auspices of the Cetacean Specialist Group and attended by 19 invited participants from eight countries. Financial support was provided by WWF (International). The Ocean Conservancy. Animal Welfare Institute. Humane Society of the United States. Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. U.S. Marine Mammal Commission and U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The workshop was hosted by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

This book provides a brief overview of some of the key aspects of the Solomon island's marine environments and the threats they face. The Solomon region's marine ecosystems are some of the most diverse and intact on earth. They have been identified as part of the 'Coral Triangle' which is an area of the highest biodiversity of coral and fish species on the planet. It is these rich resources that support the livelihoods of the rural population, Solomon people have been sustainably using these marine and forest resources for thousands of years. The recent change to commercial harvesting of forests and reefs as well as future climate change related impacts has and will continue to place new pressure on these resources.

This nomination document is to support the recommendation made in 1989 by the Solomon Island Government that World Heritage listing be pursued for Lake Tegano on East Rennell in Rennell and Bellona Province and for Marovo Lagoon in the Western Province. The New Zealand Government was invited to be the sponsor country to enable the Solomon Islands to become a State Party to the World Heritage Convention and to assist with the procedures for listing.
