Global climate funds have faced much criticism for failing to deliver fast and flexibility enough to match the urgency of the climate crisis, especially for the world's most climate vulnerable countries. In the Pacific region, access to climate finance is a clear priority of leaders and the need for easier access and greater quantities of funds flowing to the region has consistently been raised at both regional and international fora.

Temperatures have increased, sea level has risen, cyclones have become less frequent but more intense, and ocean acidification has occurred1,2. This is affecting water resources, health, agriculture, fisheries, biodiversity, infrastructure, tourism and other sectors

The Pacific ocean's exceptional terrestrial and marine biodiversity offers invaluable services to communities. But for this part of the world is particularly vulnerable to climate change, which has a direct impact on ecosystems and traditional way of life. The KIWA initiative is a multi-donor program that aims to strengthen the climate resilience of ecosystems, communities and economies in the Pacific countries and territories by using Nature-based solutions (NbS) to protect, restore and sustainably manage biodiversity.
