The Environment sector is one of 14 sectors established by the Government of Samoa to coordinate the implementation of its national development agenda. The sector is responsible for coordinating efforts towards the realisation of Key Outcome 13and 14 on "enhanced environmental sustainability and climate disaster resilience" in the strategy for the development of Samoa (SDS). These efforts are defined in the National Environment Sector Plan (NESP) 2017-2021 under four key thematic areas involving natural resources and environment, built environment, climate change and disaster risk management and environmental governance

The purpose of this management plan is to set objectives and policies that will guide the Park Management with its implementation programs in accordance with the Lands, Survey and Environment Act 1989, Section 116. This is the third Management Plan produce since the designation of the area as a National Park in 1978. This first plan was produced in 1981 while second one was produced in 2011.

Samoa is an archipelago of nine volcanic islands located in the Polynesia region of the South Pacific. The land area of Samoa is 2,830km2, 99% of which is the two main islands, Upolu and Savai'i. The capital of Samoa, Apia, is on this island of Upolo, home to 77% of the 195,979 population .

Despite the ongoing impacts from the pandemic, the PacWastePlus programme Management Unit has continued to deliver outcomes, and has redoubled efforts to actively engage with you all, albeit remotely, we do understand that this has placed new burdens on you all, especially considering other programmes and agencies will have been requesting similar amounts of your time. We appreciate your ongoing commitment to the Programme and hope this edition of Connections provides some useful information on action to date, and outcomes that we will be providing in the coming few months.

Samoa has long recognized the Pacific ocean as a source of social and economic benefit which has sustained its communities for generations. The ocean remains a primary resource for food and livelihoods that requires responsible stewardship. As a large ocean state, Samoa require tools resources and planning to effectively manage its vast ocean area.

Samoa has a well-developed system of waste management legislation compared to may other Pacific Island nations. It has a dedicated Waste Management Act introduced in 2010.

Sharks and rays plays an important role in the cultures and traditions of the Pacific people, including Samoans. These species are featured in our songs, legends and myths, in our traditional tattoos, clothing designs and traditional practices. As many sharks are top predators, they maintain the balance in healthy marine ecosystems, supporting eco-tourism and livelihoods.
