The Pacific Island countries (PICs) are the frontline of the impacts of climate change and face existential threats to their nations as a result. The PICs have also been among the most vocal advocates of the need to undertake urgent global climate change (CC) mitigating measures and to be supported to adapt to its impacts.

The 15 Pacific developing member countries (DMCs) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) are exposed to a wide range of worsening climate-related hazards, such as tropical cyclones, floods, droughts storm surges and sea level rise. The region also faces geo physical hazards such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Increasing Community Resilience to Climate Extremes and Natural Disasters. By closely observing their local environment, communities in the Pacific have developed skills that enable them to build coping strategies for extreme weather and climate events. They are able to make their own predictions for weather and climate variables based on traditional knowledge that has evolved through observation and experience over a considerable period of time.
