managing end-of-life tyres (ELTs) in the Pacific Islands present unique challenge due to the region's geographical isolation, small economies, limited infrastructure and environmental and health risks, including pollution, fire hazards, and the breeding of disease-carrying mosquitoes. As tyre waste continues to grow in the region, the need for an effective regulatory framework to manage ELTs becomes increasingly urgent. This Guidance note provides details of the various legislative options available to govern waste management of End-Of-Life Tyres.

This Guideline on the Establishment of a Disaster Waste Working Group for the Pacific provides practical guidance for Pacific Island countries and territories on how to form, structure, and operationalise a national Disaster Waste Working Group (DWWG). It outlines key steps, roles, and considerations necessary for establishing an effective coordination mechanism to support disaster waste preparedness, response, and recovery. The guideline is designed to help governments integrate disaster waste management into existing disaster risk reduction and environmental frameworks, ensuring a collaborative, multi-sectoral approach. By following the guideline, countries can strengthen their institutional readiness, enhance inter-agency coordination, and ensure timely and effective management of disaster waste, thereby contributing to more resilient and sustainable communities across the Pacific.

The template regulations provided in this document are a starting point for countries wishing to progress similar regulations in their jurisdictions that suit their specific legislative environment.

A healthcare waste management policy provides detail as to the specific objectives for an effective and sustainable healthcare waste management system. A Healthcare Waste Management Strategy & Implementation Guidelines document provides the specific requirements for implementation of healthcare waste policy. This Model Strategy and Guideline is designed to assist Pacific Island Countries to reflect the requirements of appropriate national Acts and the Regulations, as they apply to managing the health and safety risks, and environmental risks posed by healthcare waste. The Model Strategy and Guideline should be tailored to the individual legislative framework of the country seeking to adopt and implement the Strategy and Guideline. As such, this Model Strategy and Guideline is designed to provide base information that is easily tailored to specific circumstances and legislation used in Country. Lastly, this document contains all critical elements needed to produce a National Healthcare Waste Management Strategy and Implementation Guideline. However, depending on circumstances, some of the Strategy and Guideline sections may not be needed. In those situations, those sections should be excised from the final document adopted.
