This report presents results from the Economic Valuation of the Navakavu LMMA study,supported by the Research Institute for Development (IRD), the Coral Reef Initiative for the South Pacific (CRISP) and the Institute of Applied Sciences (IAS) at the University of the South Pacific. The aim of this smdy was to estimate the total economic value (TEV) of the coastal ecosystems within the Navakavu Locally Managed Marine Area. In addition, the study aimed to estimate the economic value of the LMMA management intervention, in order to assess the economic impact of establishing a protected area.

Sea turtles will become extinct unless appropriate action is taken to reverse the decline. This study assesses the existing framework and mechanisms for sea turtle conservation at the international, regional and national levels. The study is a combination of literature and legislative review, a case study of a traditional sea turtle fishing community, and interviews with key contacts. Local perspective 011 sea turtle conservation 111 regard to culture, traditional knowledge, and socio-economic considerations is addressed to provide insight into the stams of turtle conservation 111 the country.
