Like so many communities and territories, even the planet itself, placed in peril by today's global climate emergency, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) future relies on the full and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement. The Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Agreement, spelling out how each nation contributes to it, have thereby become the most important public documents for the future of the world and the survival of our human civilization as we know it.

In 2020, border closures associated with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted fishery supply chains, which proved highly detrimental to the economy. The country is also tasked with balancing resources for its urban and rural populations, and enhancing resilience to climate change.

Considering the situation this Solid Waste Management Plan for Majuro (SWMP-M) has been drawn up to enable Majuro to establish a technically sound and financially sustainable solid waste management (SWM) systems. SWM issues targeted under this plan plan are summarized here based on the present SWM situation which has been identified technically and quantitatively through a waste flow analysis

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) forms an archipelago of coral atolls located in the Micronesia region of the South Pacific. It’s 113km2 of land is made up of 34 atolls and low coral islands, 24 of which are inhabited. Its exclusive economic zone covers an oceanic area of 1.2million km2. The capital of RMI is Majuro, home to about 74% of the 53,158 population.

Responsibilities foe the waste management exist within a range of legislation and regulations but there is no dedicated waste management legislation

The project will also take into account how this cultural valuation can be used to contribute to a sea turtle monitoring programme and population baseline assessment for the RMI. Additionally, in keeping with the concept of je ilo bok, literally “write in the book”, researchers will document traditional and contemporary Marshallese cultural, ecological and health knowledge regarding sea turtles, describe sea turtle “flows” through marine and human ecosystems (including markets and bartering systems), compare contemporary knowledge of sea turtle ecology, natural history and usage with historical and ethnographic accounts, and put that combined knowledge into preservable formats (in both English and Marshallese) for the use of cur-rent and future generations.By focusing on a culturally, traditionally and nutritionally important species and by investigating potential hazards to these species as well as the human populations that rely on them, this project will allow local participants to help identify and mitigate these hazards as well as gain experience in a wide array of research and investigative techniques that comprise the holistic approach of environmental anthropology.
