SHOW REEL : Illegal Timber, IWC VNR, Bazaruto Archipelago
Whilst there is increasing concern to protect and preserve the remaining rainforests, illegal logging continues in South East Asia where only 14% of the rainforest remains untouched in the Phillipines. As a result, flooding occured killing 7 thousand people. Such illegal logging continues while efforts to regulate their activities have been made difficult by corruption. A second issue is that of the Whaling Industry in Japan. Since the 1950's, whale popularity became widespread it's commercial value led to the expansion of an industry capable of depleting whale population. Fortunately, whale watching is slowly taking over whale consumption as people are now realising that whales are worth more alive than dead. Lastly, the Bazaruto Archipelago offers a unique biodiversity with an abundance of animal and bird species. A conservation project "The Endangered Wildlife Trust", sponsored by WWF and the South African Airways worked together to encourage a more harmonious approach in working with the environment. It is hoped that projects like this will generate greater public awareness and appreciation to protect and preserve this unique biodiversity.
