Marine litter negatively affects the environment people and coastal economies around the world. In the Pacific region the problem is even more serious as countries depends on healthy and sustainable marine ecosystems. To promote a Cleaner Pacific, SPREP actively participated in the International Coastal Clean-up Day 2023 for the third year through Agence francaise de deceloppement funded SWAP Project in collaboration with the Australian funded POLP project as well as the ISLANDS Pacific Ocean and Plastic Tide Turners projects.

In celebration of International Coastal Clean-Up Day (ICCD) 2023, the Moata’a Village Community and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), joined through Committing to Sustainable Waste Actions in the Pacific (SWAP) Project, unite in efforts to clean Taumeasina's marine litter. This harmonious effort represents our unwavering dedication to safeguarding our coastal treasures and eradicating plastic pollution from our marine ecosystems. Each year, SWAP Project, in conjunction with local communities, undertakes marine litter clean-ups, waste audits, and surveys. La Journée mondiale de nettoyage du littoral se tient tous les troisièmes samedis de septembre. Il s’agit de la plus grande journée de nettoyage du littoral au monde, et l’édition de 2021 marquera la 35e année d’actions réalisées dans le cadre de cette manifestation. En 2019, plus de 940 000 volontaires du monde entier ont ramassé plus de 7 300 tonnes de déchets le long de 39 500 kilomètres de plages et de cours d’eau. Depuis les 35 dernières années ou presque, plus de 50 millions de volontaires ont ramassé plus de 280 000 tonnes de déchets dans 180 pays du monde. Les déchets marins sont un problème mondial, intergénérationnel et transfrontalier qui a des effets néfastes sur l’environnement, les populations et les économies côtières de la planète

Every year, on the third Saturday in September, the International Coastal Cleanup Day (ICCD) is celebrated. This is the single largest coastal clean up in the world, and 2021 will mark the 35 year of the ICCD in action. In 2019, more than 940,000 volunteers from all around the world removed over 16 million pounds of trash along 24,500 miles of beaches and waterways. Over the last almost 35 years, more than 50 million volunteers removed more than 617 million pounds of trash in 180 countries around the world. Marine litter is a global, Intergenerational and transboundary issue that negatively affects the environment people and coastal economies around the world.
