The Circular Approach to Waste Management is a sustainable model of production and consumption that emphasises sharing, learning, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products for as long as possible.

Pacific island countries and territories offer rich ecosystems that are threatened by population and urbanisation growth and changing consumption patterns leading to increased waste generation. The SWAP project assists six beneficiary countries and territories, those being: Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu and Wallis and Futuna, in implementing sustainable waste management actions.

The problem of marine litter is a global issue that impacts the environment, people and economies around the world. Engaging people in the preservation and cleaning of coastlines is crucial to the conservation of the ocean.

Poor management of used oil is a major environmental concern for Pacific island nations. Vanuatu Customs (DCIR) data (2021) indicates that about 640,000 litres of lubricants are imported into the country annually. It is estimated that imported lubricant generate around 330,000 litres of used oil annually that needs to be sustainably managed

Since 2018, Sustainable coastlines has been delivering a long-term citizen science programme in New Zealand to collect open-access scientific data on marine litter and use it to turn insights into action.

Pacific island countries and territories (PICTs) are under increasing pressure from development and growing human population and the social and economic pressures associated with this growth. Used oil has been poorly management in the Pacific in the past and is one of the priority environmental management issues for the region.

The purpose of this report is to support SWAP and the Vanuatu government agencies with decision making on the allocation of funds available for waste disposal site rehabilitation and climate resilience in Port Vila and Santo.

Marine litter negatively affects the environment, people and coastal economies around the world. In the Pacific region the problem is even more severe given countries' reliance on healthy ocean ecosystems and services.
