This VCP proposal is for the repair and re-commissioning of the automatic weather station at Hanan International Airport, Niue. The station was rendered unserviceable as a result of the passage of Tropical Cyclone Heta in January 2004. The station is essential to supplement the daytime manual reporting programme, both for meteorological data requirements and also to ensure that an appropriate reporting programme for international aviation is in place.

This policy reflects the results of a 3 year international research program undertaken by the Ocean Policy Research Foundation (OPRF), the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) at the University of Wollongong and their contributing technical partners, followed by a second phase of the research undertaken by OPRF, ANCORS and their contributing technical partners

This proposal has been prepared by the Ocean and Islands Programme (OIP) within the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) in collaboration with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). It has been prepared in response to an invitation1 from the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to assist the Cook Islands in deriving coastal related information to underpin and inform climate change adaptation decisions for coastal areas of Mangaia Island.
