Dans le cadre du projet PROTEGE une enquête a été réalisée à Maré par l’Agence néo-Calédonienne de la Biodiversité (ANCB) auprès des chasseurs de chèvres ensauvagées. Les objectifs sont d’évaluer les pratiques et l’effort de chasse, le niveau de prélèvements, la capacité et la volonté de diversifier les techniques de chasse et à augmenter l’effort de chasse, au regard des dégâts constatés. Les chèvres ensauvagées (ou férales, Capra hircus) contribuent à la raréfaction de nombreuses espèces végétales natives et à la dispersion et au développement de plusieurs plantes introduites envahissantes. Aux Îles Loyauté des troupeaux de chèvres sont présents sur une grande partie des corniches littorales de Lifou et de Maré, où la chasse de la chèvre ensauvagée répond principalement à un besoin pour les dons et coutumes, et pour l’autoconsommation. Une pré-enquête a été réalisée par l’animateur PROTEGE (également agent de l’ANCB), afin de recenser les chasseurs de chèvres férales sur Maré et de prendre leurs contacts pour la réalisation de l’enquête. Dans un deuxième temps, l’ensemble des chasseurs de chèvres ensauvagées identifiés ont été contactés afin de répondre à l’enquête.

A travers le projet PROTEGE, le territoire de Wallis & Futuna a souhaité renforcer sa gestion des espèces exotiques envahissantes (EEE) et plus particulièrement la biosécurité aux frontières. La biosécurité des territoires est en effet un élément essentiel pour garantir la protection et le maintien des modes de vie des populations insulaires du Pacifique en prevenant l’entrée et l’établissement des agents biologiques susceptibles d’avoir des effets néfastes sur les différents secteurs de l’économie et de la santé, ainsi que sur l’environnement. En complément d'une revue de la règlementation qui a permis plusieurs avancées en termes de biosécurité, Wallis et Futuna a souhaiter mettre élaborer des procédures opérationnelles et des moyens qui permettent sa mise en œuvre pleine et effective. Le plan opérationnel de détection précoce et réponse rapide (EDRR (en anglais)) répond à cet objectif. Il vise à renforcer la coordination entre les différents acteurs impliqués dans la biosécurité du territoire, de garantir le soutien des autorités, notamment les autorités coutumières, ainsi que la vigilance et l’observation par tous pour détecter toute nouvelle apparition ou extension d’EEE.

The rich words of Déwé Gorodé are a legacy of her work and embodies a spirit of resilience that is present in all of the elements that she depicts and speaks beyond the page. There are echoes of defiance on the impacts of colonisation and how the ‘stone and earth’ will speak, when one cannot, which is a poignant reminder of how the power of ‘writing’ may serve as a witness to our relationship with our environment and each other, that transcends time and space for a new generation. Déwé Gorodé Poet, teacher, feminist, politician and visionary, Déwé Gorodé was an advocate for the rights of indigenous people and the status of women across the region and a beacon of Oceanic literature. She was one of the first Kanak women to study at university, gaining a degree in literature from Montpellier and setting her on a path of political action, to work for her people as a writer, and a teacher. On her return to New Caledonia, she became an activist, involved with the group 1878 and then with the independence movement, PALIKA. During this period, she was writing poetry, stories and novels. Déwé published her first book of poetry Sous les cendres des conques in 1985. Writing in French, English and her own language Païci, she was prolific throughout the 1990s, with collections of short stories – Utê Mûrûnûu (1994), L’Agenda (1996) and Le Vol de la Parole (2002) – and poetry collections, including Par les temps qui courent (1996), Pierre noire (1997) and Dire le vrai (1999). Later, she turned to novels such as L’épave (2005), Graines de pin colonnaire and Tâdo, tâdo, wéé! Lauded across France and the Pacific as an indigenous and feminist writer, she always directed her work towards the new generation: “I don’t write for myself. I write for the children, for the generations to come. I continue to talk to the young, for the younger generation is our future.” Déwé was elected to Congress in May 1999, one of the first women in the new legislature. Between April 2001 and June 2009, she was elected as Vice President; between 2004-07, President Thémereau and Vice-President Gorodé were the first two women elected to lead a government in the Pacific islands. Affected by ill health in her later years, she continued as a Minister of Culture, Citizenship and Women, seeking the post-conflict reconciliation required to create a “common destiny” for New Caledonia. Her death in August 2022 ended a courageous life as an advocate for the rights of indigenous people and the status of women across the region. The Mana Moana - Pasifika Voices collection of video works was created to amplify and support the Pacific to drive global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This collection is the third in a series that began in 2021. These poems have been gathered from our Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa to reflect the voices and experiences of our past and present Poets, providing offerings of wisdom and insight for a new generation. The purpose of the Guiding Framework is to support anyone or any institution planning and implementing invasive species projects or programmes on islands in the Pacific. To this end, this document lists the essential components of a comprehensive and effective invasive species management programme. It has been compiled in consultation with experts and Pacific Island countries and territories, to support them in developing their invasive species work and to guide regional and international agencies. The Guiding Framework has been endorsed by all countries and territories in the Pacific islands region and the metropolitan countries with jurisdictional responsibilities in the Pacific via the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and Pacific Community (SPC) Meetings.

The problem of marine litter is a global issue that impacts the environment, people and economies around the world. Engaging people in the preservation and cleaning of coastlines is crucial to the conservation of the ocean.

Ocean and land are not separate systems, what happens in one influences the other. In this way, what happens on every Pacific island has an impact on the surrounding ocean. In the past, nutrients would flow from land to sea to keep reefs and seagrass beds healthy. Seabirds and turtles bring marine nutrients to land when they breed.

These are some dangers that impact all marine species, fishing, climate change, plastic pollution and coastal development.

Seabirds spend most of their lives at sea, but they need to come back to land every year to breed. Seabirds nest everywhere from high mountainous islands to low-lying atolls.
