Asbestos-containing materials are a major issue for Nauru with an estimated 212000 m2 if asbestos containing materials in buildings, primarily in form of asbestos-cement in roofing and cladding and stockpiles of waste.

Banaba island was mined for phosphate from 1900 to 1979. The Pacific Phosphate company constructed a large number of buildings including housing, workshops, schools, hospital, churches and other structure.

Landfill space is limited and recent waste audit confirmed that 20% of waste disposed to landfill is organic material.

Fiji's rural communities often have constrained unmanaged dumpsites which receive their waste, as a formal waste collection services are not provided.

Items are imported into the Cool Islands in growing numbers but there are currently limited viable options for their end-of-life management and or export. Most items imported are disposed of at landfills or stockpiled on vacant land.

Ocean and land are not separate systems, what happens in one influences the other. In this way, what happens on every Pacific island has an impact on the surrounding ocean. In the past, nutrients would flow from land to sea to keep reefs and seagrass beds healthy. Seabirds and turtles bring marine nutrients to land when they breed.
