This report outlines the activities and community groups in Solomon Islands that took part in the trianing workshops and the beach litter surveys and data collection. This report includes the training material delivered and photos of the field work.

The Standards and Certification Programme for Phasing out SUPs in the Pacific Islands Tourism Industry were developed in partnership with SPTO and the Australian Government-funded Pacific Ocean Litter Project, implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP). The Standards & Certification Programme aims to raise awareness of sustainable plastic alternatives and advocate for the adoption of these alternatives within tourism businesses in the Pacific.

Pacific island countries and territories offer rich ecosystems threatened by population and urbanisation growth and changing consumption patterns, leading to increased waste generation. Healthy Pacific ecosystems are essential for economic development of communities in the Pacific island countries and territories however due to their economic and ecological features, these Pacific islands face their own challenges.

Marine Litter Study Report produced with the financial assistance of the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) Group funds under the SUSTAINABLE WASTE ACTIONS IN THE PACIFIC (SWAP) project in SPREP, with associated project support of the Pacific Ocean Litter Project (POLP) and the Implementing Sustainable Low and Non-Chemical Development in Small Island Developing States (GEF ISLANDS) for informational purposes only to acknowledge the support of work provided by representatives of the participating countries and territories, as well as all the organisations, communities and volunteers involved in beach clean-ups and litter audits and surveys for their valuable work throughout the implementation of the project and activities.

Sustainable Coastlines is providing in person training for communities and associations involved in the implementation of the SWAP Marine litter Pilot Projects, to enable them to conduct statistically sound beach litter surveys and audits during clean-up activities and to enable them to record this data using the Litter Intelligence online application for Marine Litter data sharing.

The ever-increasing discharges and accumulation of microplastics in the environment is a serious global concern. Microplastics are found in polar ice caps, at the top of mountains, in soil, freshwater systems and all ocean basins, from the surface to the deep sea.

Sea-based marine plastic pollution is roughly estimated to comprise around 20% of all marine plastic pollution and represents a major threat to marine ecosystem. However, sea-based marine plastic pollution has not been sufficiently addressed to date representing a significant gap in global governance.
