The second phase of the Sustainable Waste Actions in the Pacific (SWAP2) project1 builds upon the achievements of the first phase, which aimed to improve sanitation, environmental, social and economic conditions in five Pacific island countries — Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu — and one French territory — Wallis-and-Futuna — through improved waste management systems.

The intent of the National Solid and hazardous waste policy of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is to build on this foundation and direction by providing the Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap State Governments and their communities clear guidance and support to enable its realization. By doing this, solid and hazardous wastes will be managed with compliantly, safely and responsively for the benefit of both the environment and the people of the FSM.

The National Waste Management Strategy acknowledges and seeks to enable the FSM States to continue delivery of their individual solid waste management strategies and recognises that effective management of solid and hazardous wastes is everyone's responsibility. At the heart of this lay collaboration and teamwork - key values that will drive a successful shift towards sustainable waste and resource management.

This short animation provides an overview for Port Vila residents on what is going into their household garbage bags. By examining each item, viewers are encouraged to make small but meaningful changes that can reduce waste, save money, and minimise what ends up in landfill. The animation advises that by choosing to recycle and dispose of waste responsibly, households can contribute to a cleaner and healthier Vanuatu.

Link to the play Bae Yumi Winim Kompetesen Ia ("Let’s Win This Competition!"), developed by Wan Smolbag Theatre in partnership with the Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation (DEPC) as part of a national awareness campaign on waste management. The play uses humour, music, and culturally resonant storytelling to explore everyday waste issues in Vanuatu. The story follows local characters navigating the challenges of plastic pollution, waste burning, and littering—all while competing in a fictional “cleanest community” contest. Through laughter and local language, the play delivers practical messages on sorting waste, community action, and the dangers of poor disposal practices.

The Vanuatu Waste Analysis Report provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of waste generation, composition and management across the country. It serves as a foundational document to guide policy formulation, infrastructure development and stakeholder coordination toward a more effient, inclusive and sustainable waste management system. Data and information captured in this report guided by the overarching Regional Waste Data Collection, Monitoring and Reporting Framework (DCMR)

Vanuatu is one of fifteen countries to participate in the SPREP implemented and European Union’s Delegation to the Pacific funded PacWastePlus Programme. The PacWaste Plus Programme aimed to improve waste management activities across the islands and strengthen the capacity of governments, industries, and communities to manage waste and protect human health and the environment.
