Investigations on the soft bottom benthos in a Southwest Pacific atoll lagoon (Uvea, New Caledonia)

Microbenthos and macrobenthos were quantitatively studied at 62 stations distributed regularly over the Uvea Atoll lagoon (850 km2). Sampling was performed using both SCUBA and a 0.1 m2 Smith Mclntyre grab. Mean estimates of ATP, chlorophyll a and phaeopigments were 297.3ng/cm2, 77.01 mg/m2 and 35.28 mg/m2 respectively. The mean macrobenthic biomass was 4.14 gAFDW/m2 of which the macrophytobenthos accounts for 39%. The benthic biomass decreased from the coast to the deepest parts of the lagoon. Macrophytes were most abundant in the coastal area and became progressively scarcer with increasing depth. By comparison, sessile species dominated on hard substrates in intermediate and deep zones. The abundance of the surface-deposit feeder group, that dominated the trophic structure of zoobenthos (33% of the macrofauna biomass), could be explained by a microphytic biomass six times higher than macrophytobenthic one in terms of carbon. Carnivores (32%) were mainly represented by necrophagous species, and filter-feeders (27%) by bivalves. Herbivores were rare. Four main benthic communities were identified on the basis of their macrobenthic assemblages using a Detrended Correspondence analysis. They corresponded to (1) a coastal zone, with the highest mud percentage in sediments, (2) an intermediate zone, with moderate depth and dominated by hard substrates, (3) a back reef zone, with thick sand layers, and (4) a deep zone dominated by hard substrates. Relative distribution of the trophic groups varied according to the different zones and suggests distinct functional characteristics for the different benthic assemblages. From a biogeographic point of view, this study highlighted the richness of the Uvea Atoll lagoon in terms of benthic species and biomass, compared to other central Pacific atoll lagoons.

Williamson and Sabath (1982) have demonstrated a significant relationship between modern population size and environment by examining atoll area and rainfall in the Marshall Islands. The present work seeks to extend that argument into prehistory by examining the relationship of ancient habitation sites and size of aroid pit agricultural systems to atoll land area and rainfall regime along the 1,500-3,500 mm precipitation gradient in the Marshall Islands. Four atolls were selected for study: Ebon at the wettest extent in the extreme south; Ujae and Maloelap near the center of the archipelago; and Utrok at the dry north. The first phase of this long-term archaeological program is reported. During the survey of Ujae Atoll (90 05' N, 165° 40' E), three habitation sites, an aroid pit agricultural zone, one early historic burial, and seven fish traps, weirs, and enclosures were recorded. Along with excavations at two habitation sites (8 m2 total area), 35 traditional artifacts were recovered (shell adzes, ornaments, and manufacturing tools). Seven radiocarbon age determinations document land use beginning as early as the third century A.D. A beachrock sample dated to 2450 ± 70 BP relates to atoll development. Some 4,748 bones of fish, birds, turtles, Pacific rats, lizards, humans, and possible cetaceans, along with nearly 13 kg of shellfish, provide the basis for understanding prehistoric subsistence, human adaptations to the atoll setting, and land use patterns.
The non-native vascular plants of Henderson Island, South Central Ocean

Henderson island, a World Heritage Site in the Pitcairn group, south-central Pacific Ocean, has often been thought to have a pristine vegetation. Our archaeological investigations and field observations in 1991-1992, supported by recent observations in 1997, suggest the occurrence of former areas of Polynesian cultivation near to the North and East Beaches, and indicate that about 17 non-native vascular plant taxa have occurred. The majority of these were deliberate Polynesian introductions, some taxa are known only as sub-fossils from Polynesian occupation sites; some of this sub-fossil material may represent imported plant parts such as timber or food wraps, rather than indicating in situ cultivation. These Polynesian introductions show little spread from their probable site of introduction and are mostly restricted to the vicinity of the northern beaches; some have become extinct on Henderson. The Pitcairn islanders have also introduced a small number of vascular plants, and one of these (Passiflora maliformis) is potentially invasive. Other taxa have been accidentally introduced, at least one by a recent scientific expedition in 1991. The intact nature of much of the native vegetation may have restricted the opportunities for more widespread colonization; care is needed to ensure that this situation persists.

The lagoon of Tarawa harbors the richest benthos documented for any Pacific atoll. The biota is strongly influenced by its setting in the equatorial upwelling zone and the unusual geomorphology of the atoll, with a submerged western rim, but largely closed and islet-strewn eastern and southern sides. As the metropolitan center of the Republic of Kiribati, Tarawa also has the largest human population of any Pacific atoll. These three attributes impose a strong influence on all aspects of the lagoon. The high regional productivity supports unusually high population densities of heterotrophic mollusks and irregular echinoids for an "open" atoll. The dense human population on the atoll relics largely on marine resources for its protein needs. The lagoonal sand flat harbors dense and diverse mollusk communities, particularly in seagrass beds. These communities support an intensive subsistence fishery with an annual harvest of ca. 1,000 tons in South Tarawa. Much of the available biomass of the two preferred species, the blood cockle Anadara uropigimelana (te bun) and the small conch Strombus luhuanus (te nouo), is taken. Both the seagrass and shellfish beds appear to have expanded considerably in the past 50 years, likely as a result of nutrient enrichment from the rapidly growing human population. Dense mollusk communities along the southeastern lagoon slope at 2-8 m depth support an intensive commercial fishery that harvests approximately 1,000 tons of Anadara per year, again representing much of the available production. Three species of irregular echinoids are conspicuously abundant on the floor of the eastern lagoon, with combined densities > 100 m-2 in the muddy facies of the inner lagoon. All aspects of the benthos follow a marked west-to-east and north-to-south zonation, reflecting the one-sided exchange of oceanic waters along the western atoll rim. While mollusk and echinoid biomass increases southeastward, coral diversity and cover decreases in that direction.
