FAME (SPC Division of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems) main's work is to provide the 22 SPC's member countries and territories with the information they need to make informed decisions on the management and development of their aquatic resources, and help to provide the tools and strengthen the capacity needed to implement these decisions.

The aim of the RGC is to assist Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) to conserve the region's genetic resources, and to provide access to the germplasm they need. The Centre is using in vitro techniques for conservation, and priority is given to taro, yam, sweet potato and banana, but other crops, such as cassava, kava, breadfruit, aibika (Abelmoschus manihot) and black pepper are also receiving attention. The RGC was a key partner in the Taro Genetic Resources Conservation & Utilization (TaroGen), the Taro Network for Southeast Asia and Oceania (TANSAO) and the South Pacific Yam Network (SPYN) projects, and currently collaborates with IPGRI's global crop networks, such as the International Network for Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP) and the Coconut Genetic Resources Network (COGENT). It is also collaborating with other international agricultural research centres (IARCs), in particular the Centro Internacional de Agricultural Tropical (CIAT), the International Potato Centre (CIP) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), to make improved germplasm of their mandate crops (cassava ,sweet potato and yams, respectively) available in the Pacific.

PYS2010 is a strategic regional framework to guide preparing young people2 in the Pacific region to take responsibility for their overall development and well-being. It has been designed with input from national and regional stakeholders, including Pacific Island youth, and represents a firm commitment to providing more opportunities for young Pacific Islanders so that they will be inspired to realise their full potential and contribute to the social, economic and cultural well-being of their societies.

At their 1999 meeting, Pacific Islands Forum Leaders endorsed a list of recommendations emerging from the Pacific Regional Follow-up Workshop on the Implementation of the Law of the Sea Convention, convened in Tonga in 1999. Although most of the recommendations could only be implemented by national governments, one of the recommendations — that a regional ocean policy be produced — was adopted as a regional level initiative. The Marine Sector Working Group (MSWG) of the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP) was tasked with developing a regional ocean policy. The draft policy produced by the MSWG was presented to official meetings and governing councils of the various CROP organisations, and was subsequently endorsed by the 33rd Pacific Islands Forum, in 2002. In doing so, Forum leaders recalled their 1995 decision urging members to become parties to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea at the earliest opportunity. Leaders called for follow-up action plans, both for the region and for individual countries

Documentation of animals introduced to Pacific islands since European contact is for the most part anecdotal. Long-term, quantitative studies have not been conducted in the marine environment as they have in other areas. The purpose of this review is to record the intentional and accidental introduction of aquatic plants and animals to the Pacific islands (the area encompassed by the South Pacific Commission). Plants and animals are distributed either intentionally or accidentally. Five periods of introductions for aquatic and terrestrials animals have been proposed (Eldredge, 1992).
