Invasive Species are the leading driver of biodiversity loss in the Pacific. They have a significant impact on ecosystem resilience leading to a loss of ecosystem services and a reduced ability to adapt to climate change. PRISMSS aims to assist the Pacific in stepping up on-the-ground management of invasive species.

We are all watching the horizon for sightings of the Marumaru Atua vaka as it returns from an historic voyage of the northern group Pa ‘Enua Tokerau. Our staff Alanna Smith and Kelvin Passfield are onboard having spent the last 7 weeks sharing a message on Ocean Health with the communities.

This year, nations of the world are expected to set ambitious new targets for protecting biodiversity. In much of the world, achieving spatial targets will require conservation of areas under private ownership. Throughout 2021 IUCN is hosting the Vital Sites webinar series which is rich in expert insights and discussions across all of the many areas of expertise in our global network. All seminars are recorded. In June the series explored the potential for privately protected areas (PPAs).

This September edition of our newsletter comes to you from the lovely island of Mangaia, where we have been this past week, participating in the southern Marumaru Atua vaka voyage and school presentations, as well as working on a community waste management project.

The PEBACC has a set in motion a growing awareness amongst communities of the imperative to work with nature, based on sound science and scientific understanding both traditional and contemporary. Maintaining momentum of activities beyond the life of a funded project has many challenges.

We humans heavily depend on nature the web of life, gives us food we eat, filters the water we drink, and supplies the air we breathe. Nature is important for our mental and physical well-being, as it is for our society's ability to cope with global change, health threats and disasters. We need nature in our lives!.
