This thesis critically examines the protections available to climate vulnerable Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and their peoples under international law from a climate justice perspective. It explores how key principles, obligations, and mechanisms of international human rights law and state responsibility can be used to secure effective legal remedies for both SIDS governments and individuals. An interdisciplinary approach to the development of a climate justice framework to inform future law and policy making is adopted, applying and building upon the bodies of political theory and international legal scholarship.

environmental change has been associated with human mobility over the years and climate change is starting to affect movement in new ways, now termed climate mobility. In this research brief, the effect of climate change on women and persons with disability in Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu is examined with emphasis on human mobility.

This country diagnostics assessment reviews the current disaster risk financing (DRF) landscape and enabling environment in Fij, with a particular focus on risk transfer instruments- insurance, reinsurance and capital markets. The Pacific Island countries including the Fiji Islands are heavily dependent on imported petroleum fuels for their energy needs. This is a major cause of environmental vulnerability as well as economic vulnerability due to high and volatile crude oil prices.

Fiji is a nation of over 300 islands whose past, present and future are intrinsically linked to the ocean. The wealth and resources associated with Fiji's vast marine areas represent significant natural capital and are valid pillars of the country's food security. The ocean is also central to traditions, culture, its art, research and education.

Climate change constitutes a major threat to the Pacific way of life despite the region’s countries contributing negligibly towards climate warming greenhouse gas emissions. It poses a substantial risk to the economic, social and environmental progress of the region and exacerbates threats to the realisation of fundamental human rights. With the increasing frequency and intensity of climate-induced events such as cyclones and droughts, Pacific economies run the risk of losing decades of development gains in a matter of hours to the perils of a rapidly changing climate. Slow onset events like sea level rise increase the risk of inundation and coastal flooding, exacerbate erosion and saltwater intrusion into rivers and underground aquifers, and cause infrastructural damage. The problem is acute in the region’s atoll states.
