The Pacific Network for Environmental Assessment (PNEA) was created to support government officials from Pacific Island countries and territories who work with environmental impact assessment (EIA) and strategic environmental assessment (SEA). The role of the PNEA portal has also grown since the pandemic with the global border restrictions practitioners are no longer able to attend face-to-face trainings or conferences and have become reliant on virtual support.

Establish a Pacific Island country network of national and regional databases for monitoring, evaluating and analysing environmental information to support environmental planning, forecasting and reporting requirements at all levels.

This September edition of our newsletter comes to you from the lovely island of Mangaia, where we have been this past week, participating in the southern Marumaru Atua vaka voyage and school presentations, as well as working on a community waste management project.

As an informative publication, the Digest provides a collection of key information form various of sources, including from programmes partners on issues related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), environmental governance ocean governance, sustainable development and South Cooperation relevant for the implementation of the ACP MEAs3 programme

The ACP MEAs is an EC-UNEP partnership programme that begun in March 2009 as an initiative of the European Commission to address challenging environmental issues through the implementation of the MEAs in the African, Caribbean, and the Pacific (ACP) regions. The programme is currently in its third phase of implementation, aiming to assist 79 ACP-countries to enforce and comply with MEAs related to biodiversity and chemicals and waste and to deal with issues of Ocean/Seas governance.

This guide introduces environmental indicators and provides an overview of SPREP’S core indicators for Pacific island countries. This document explains the development and use of environmental indicators in Part 1 and provides a summary of each of the 34 ‘core’ indicators in Part 2.

Data, which are growing at an unprecedented rate, are becoming an integral part of the daily lives of most people everywhere. But how does that matter for the more than 700 million people living in extreme poverty? Is the explosion in the new types and uses of data improving their lives? Or will poor people and poor countries be left behind, creating a widening gap between those who reap the benefits of this new data-driven world and those who do not?

The key highlights of this month’s issue include international ministerial conference draft resolution on marine litter, dealing with natural capital accounting, orientation sessions in support of CBD OWG 3.1 meeting,focus on traditional knowledge and biodiversity targets, fighting poverty by protecting the environment and the impacts of plastic pollution on migratory species.
