Vanuatu is a proudly agricultural nation, producing high-quality crop livestock, marine and forestry products that are exported around the world.

The term gender-based violence highlights gender dimension of the violence and the root cause of the violence. However the Pacific, gender-based violence is often used against women and girls to adopt a gender-neutral approach to the issue.

To be successful, initiatives aimed at the betterment of lives and the environment must recognize women’s frequent roles as primary land and resource managers and weigh the different ways women and men consider conservation and sustainable use incentives. Projects must also recognise that women and girls often carry the responsibility of water collection and household water use. In impoverished or disadvantaged communities, the role of water in the community is especially gendered.

Gender plays a key role in the access to and utilisation of water resources and the livelihoods that they support. In many places around the world women and men exhibit distinct differences in their perspectives and priorities concerning environmental quality, natural resource use and access to basic requirements such as water, energy and food.

This book is divided into 3 sections. The first section explores some of the main themes currently concerning forests and gender. The second section looks at case studies from around the world, demonstrating the wealth of learning and experience that is resulting from increased awareness and integration of gender issues within forestry work. The third and final section takes a step back and examines issues and progress at the international and global levels, bringing us up to date and forecasting future challenges and developments.
