This traditional knowledge and practices have been passed down from one generation to another and include seasonal bans on fishing and temporary no take zones during certain occasions. Therefore traditional systems have been the basis for setting up ‘tabu’ areas or other forms of marine management.The main difference between then and now is the period of the ‘tabu.’ Whilst it used to be for a short time, now ‘tabu’ areas are put in place for a longer period of time and now include best available modern knowledge and practice.
