Ecotourism is a hot topic in the tourism industry in Fiji. This may help preserve important natural and culture sites and same providing income for land owners. Fiji equality product which also refers to Ecotourism a type that has many definitions; ideally would be small scale quality tourism of a significant towards a scenic conservation area with a environmental and cultural focus.

The techniques of environment impact assessment, environment planning and protected areas are manifestations of the of western society with its growth of rationality, bureaucratisation and the centrality accorded to science. Environment impact assessment and planning techniques are also part of a growing international perspective on environmentalism that is moving towards common environmental standards and policies. The concept of formally protected areas is being subsumed into this globalist perspective, part of a scientifically-based discourse that argues loss of biodiversity is a global issue requiring a global solution.

Like so many communities and territories, even the planet itself, placed in peril by today's global climate emergency, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) future relies on the full and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement. The Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Agreement, spelling out how each nation contributes to it, have thereby become the most important public documents for the future of the world and the survival of our human civilization as we know it.

This dissertation examines the relationship between contemporary development projects and the Fijian idea vanua which is commonly translated as “land” but entails meanings of people, community, and custom. Often treated as a rigid cosmological entity with its own cultural order, in this dissertation I argue that when viewed as an environmental framework in which historical actors and ideas are constantly moving in and out, vanua is actually flexible, open-ended, and has the capacity to interact and collaborate with contemporary development projects such as environmental conservation and commercial farming. This capacity is built from the entanglement of diverse historical forces (e.g. indigenous politics, pre-colonial capitalism, colonial policies) which still resonate in the environment today, and is able to affect the realization of the universal values (e.g. environmentalism, development) intended to be introduced. Here I use a small coastal village called Waitabu located on Taveuni Island as the ethnographic setting to demonstrate how these processes are played out.

Local communities in the Pacific have a high dependence on their natural resources for food and livelihoods. Managing small-scale fisheries resources through locally-managed marine areas (LMMAs) is an approach that has been scaled up to cover seventy-eight percent of inshore community fishing grounds in Fiji.

The Fiji's economy suffered severely as a result of the political crises of May, 2000, when civilians took command of the Parliament and held Government parliamentarians hostage for four months. The resultant deterioration in international and national confidence coupled with sharp increase in skilled workers migration led to productivity decline.

This traditional knowledge and practices have been passed down from one generation to another and include seasonal bans on fishing and temporary no take zones during certain occasions. Therefore traditional systems have been the basis for setting up ‘tabu’ areas or other forms of marine management.The main difference between then and now is the period of the ‘tabu.’ Whilst it used to be for a short time, now ‘tabu’ areas are put in place for a longer period of time and now include best available modern knowledge and practice.

The meeting was attended by 19 participants and an additional participant made a skype presentation from his home base in Apia. Included in the group were FAO technical staff from the Sub-regional Office for the Pacific Islands (SAP) and from Rome, representatives of the regional technical agency – Secretariat of the Pacific Community, country representatives from Ministries of Agriculture and National Statistics offices, private sector consultants and the Head of the Coordination Unit for the EU funded All ACP Commodities Programme (AAACP) from Brussels (participants list is attached at Annex 2).
