The World Bank’s sixth environment and social standard [ESS6] recognizes that protecting and conserving biodiversity and sustainably managing living natural resources are fundamental to sustainable development.

Pacific Island Countries are very small in geographic space, in population and in administrative capacity – factors limiting the feasibility for development of effective country-based systems for environmental and social risk management

Cumulative impacts are changes to the environment caused by an action (i.e., project/s) in combination with other past, present, and future human actions.

The Shared Approach is intended to benefit the Pacific Island Countries through supporting and strengthening country safeguard/environmental and social systems; improving development effectiveness through the implementation of common methods, procedures and terminology; and refining counterpart understanding of PRIF development partner processes.

Nearly 25% of global deaths are attributed to economic decisions affecting environment, but stakeholders from the health community are mostly unaware of or not visible within discussions and negotiations on global environmental policies.
