The State of Environment Report provides the latest check on the threats, the state, and the impacts on Vanuatu’s environment and the response in mitigating the threats and managing human actions. The report is a legal requirement under the Environmental Management and Conservation Act No. 12 of 2002, which has been amended to the Environmental Protection and Conservation Act [CAP 283]. The assessment is on seven thematic areas and thirty-five indicators and sub-indicators. The process for the assessment looks at the drivers, pressure, state, impact and the response to each of the indicators. National consultations with key local stakeholders provided the data and information, as well as validation of the information that is presented in the State of Environment Report.

Building on the outcomes of the Pacific Day 2023 held on the sidelines of the EIANZ 2023 Conference, this webinar aims to foster an engaging Talanoa dialogue within the PNEA community of practice, focusing on the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and best practices in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) across the Pacific region.

Tourism is a significant economic driver in the Pacific, contributing to revenue, employment, and cultural exchange. However, responsible tourism management is vital to ensure that our pristine environment and unique cultural heritage are preserved for future generations. To this end, SPREP, in collaboration with the Pacific Tourism Organization (SPTO), is developing Environmental Auditing Guidelines specifically tailored for the tourism industry in our region.

This Strategy is an framework document that defines Palau’s environmental priorities and actions. It implements and is consistent with existing national policies that promote sustainable development and environmental conservation. The Strategy prescribes environmental management actions in eleven sectors including climate change; land management and food security; nearshore marine management; offshore marine management; freshwater management; biodiversity conservation; waste management; chemical management; built environment; culture, heritage, and awareness; and environmental governance.

At the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme, 2022 was a year of challenges, opportunities and continued growth and resilience. The continued growth and resilience of SPREP is a testament to the unwavering commitment by your Secretariat, including SPREP Members and Partners which have made it possible for SPREP to achieve positive results, for the conservation and protection of our Pacific environment for present and future generations, despite the challenges.

At the midpoint of the 2030 Agenda, all of the SDGs are seriously off track. From 2015 to 2019, the world made some progress on the SDGs, although this was already vastly insufficient to achieve goals. Since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020 and other simultaneous crises, SDG progress has stalled globally.
