Plastic pollution is choking our oceans and threatening the very source of life for Pacific peoples. We must act to protect our ocean, our communities and our future🌍✨. 🤝 That's why the Pacific Ocean Litter Project (POLP) - implemented ny SPREP with support from the Australian Government - is partnering with 14 Pacific Island countries to reduce the volume of single-use plastics that reach our ocean. Because protecting the ocean means protecting our future🌊✨

This study explores the potential of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) processing in Samoa as a sustainable pathway for waste management and economic development. With increasing global concerns over plastic pollution and the urgent need for sustainable alternatives, PHA emerges as a promising biodegradable polymer. Samoa, like many other small island nations, faces challenges in waste management and environmental conservation.

This Roadmap outlines strategies and plans to improve plastic circularity in Tonga. The Roadmap is based on scientific, social and economic literature review and developed through an inclusi8ve approach, involving public consultations to establish the guiding principles and mechanisms of a circular for Tonga.

The toolkit will support the implementation of the Standards and Certification framework. It provides resources, good practice examples, guidance, templates and other tools to enable all tourism businesses and organication to implement the criteria and advance the proposed four tiers of the Certification Framework to achieve and sustain the goal of 100% reductions of SUPs.

The Commonwealth Youth Forum brought together young people from across the Commonwealth to discuss emerging issues impacting them including the plastic pollution crisis. We spoke to some young delegates to hear how the plastic pollution crisis is impacting their communities, their role in addressing the issue and the kind of future they would like to see. The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) brings together delegations from 56 nations from Africa, the Caribbean and Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific. Samoa is hosting the meeting this week, the first time it's held in the Pacific Islands. This provides insights into the source, types and quantities of waste generated during CHOGM to help plan for effective waste management strategies for the future. As countries gather for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), taking place in Apia, Samoa this week, we urge everyone to reflect on our daily habits and how they impact our planet. 👎🏽 Say NO to single-use plastics: ‘Replace’ single-use plastics products like bottles, straws, bags and cutlery with eco-friendly alternatives. ♻️ Use designated rubbish bins: there are two kinds of bins at the CHOGM venues. Plastic and cans go into their correct slots at the recycle bins placed at key locations such as near the dining areas while everything else goes into the general waste bins.
