The State of Environment Report provides the latest check on the threats, the state, and the impacts on Vanuatu’s environment and the response in mitigating the threats and managing human actions. The report is a legal requirement under the Environmental Management and Conservation Act No. 12 of 2002, which has been amended to the Environmental Protection and Conservation Act [CAP 283]. The assessment is on seven thematic areas and thirty-five indicators and sub-indicators. The process for the assessment looks at the drivers, pressure, state, impact and the response to each of the indicators. National consultations with key local stakeholders provided the data and information, as well as validation of the information that is presented in the State of Environment Report.

this report overviews the outcomes of and in-country work programme, undertaken by NIWA to address the scope of work for supply, installation and commissioning of hydrometric monitoring date management and processing systems to improve flood warning systems in Vanuatu, including the provision of TIDEDA and hydrometirc monitoring training of DoWR staff.

The analysis in this study relies on previous work, in particular, the flood simulators that were updated by Stetter et al. (2016) on re-evaluation of the flood hazard in Port Vila and Luganville. The extreme rainfall analysis is updated using recent work from Broadbent et al. (2022) and the future climate extreme analysis has been previously completed by Chand et al. (2023) for the Van KIRAP project

This inception report documents of an initial work programme to address the scope of work provided by SPREP and DoWR for the supply, installation and commissing of hydrometric monitoring, data management and processing systems, to improve flood warning systems in Vanuatu, including the provision of Tideda and hydrometric monitoring training for DoWR staff

The purpose of this report is to explain the background, methodology development and application of the framework. The report introduces this project and how this RCRAF aligns with the existing Van-KIRAP climate information products and outputs, provides a background to the rapid climate risk assessment.

El Niño continues in the tropical Pacific. Higher than average sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the tropical Pacific persist above El Niño thresholds, with warmer water beneath the surface to support that at the surface. In the atmos-phere, cloud, wind and pressure patterns are consistent with El Niño.

Pacific Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) for November 2023 showed a mature El Niño pattern. Across much of the tropical Pacific between 10°S and 10°N, SSTs were more than 0.8°C above the long-term average, increasing to nearly 3°C above average east of the Date Line.

Building on the outcomes of the Pacific Day 2023 held on the sidelines of the EIANZ 2023 Conference, this webinar aims to foster an engaging Talanoa dialogue within the PNEA community of practice, focusing on the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and best practices in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) across the Pacific region.

This report details priority areas of intervention to support the development of a robust Flood Management Plan (FMP) and Early Warning System (EWS) for the Sarakata-Luganville catchment. Recommendations included in this report are informed by a stocktake and gap analysis of existing flood management and early warning practices, the Flood Mitigation Guidelines for Sarakata, Pepsi and Solwei Areas (2011), the Sanma Province Disaster Response Plan, and other relevant policies and plans. Information obtained through a desktop review was supplemented with information captured during discussions with key stakeholders and responses to a survey which was completed by ten respondents representing key stakeholders engaged in flood management and early warning activities within Vanuatu. The Sarakata Flood Mitigation and Early Warning System Gap analysis report is included in Appendix E.
