The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is a financial mechanism that provides grant and concessional funds to recipient countries for activities aimed at protecting the global environment. This operational strategy has been developed to guide the preparation of country driven initiatives in the GEF four focal areas: biodiversity, climate change, international waters and ozone layer depletion.

The Government of Vanuatu has decided to set up a micro hydro electric-power station on the Epong river to provide up to 25KW of electric power for the village of Epao and to use this development project as a pilot plant for training purposes on hydro electric power management.

The Pacific Environment and Natural Resource Information Centre (PENRIC) Terminal Report (1994–1997) outlines SPREP's initiatives to enhance environmental information management in the Pacific region. The project aimed to strengthen SPREP's Geographic Information System (GIS) Unit, improve environmental reporting, and build national capacities for data collection and exchange.​
