Traditional knowledge is a system of collective understandings transferred through communities across generations. It includes indigenous peoples' knowledge of the natural environment and the ecosystems they occupy, which is founded upon long-term and deeply meaningful connections between people and place. This means traditional knowledge often contains vital perspectives and information relevant tot he conservation of wildlife, especially in remote areas where academic research has been historically limited.

Deer Abundance and Impact Monitoring Systems - PROTEGE

Innovative monitoring systems have been developed to measure the impact of the Rusa Deer on the undergrowth of New Caledonia rain forests and to assess the abundance of this invasive species in three priority areas of the territory. The development of these systems follows objectives that complement the professional control actions implemented within the PROTEGE framework. The monitoring aims to carry out an initial assessment and evaluate the benefits of the control operations, using tools tailored to action areas that are difficult to access and boast exceptional biodiversity. More than 80% of the plant species in high altitude rainforests are endemic to New Caledonia.

One of the main objectives of the biodiversity COP16 was agreement on financial means for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), the landmark “Paris Agreement for nature” deal made at COP15 in Montreal in 2022. COP 16 reviewed the development of national targets and the alignment of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) with the GBF. Despite their pledges to submit their national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) “by” COP16, only 44 out of 196 parties (22%) had come up with new biodiversity plans (only Tonga from PICs has already been submitted).

The Pacific BioScapes Programme aims to provide enhanced local fisheries management capacity and national harvest strategies for key grouper species in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The Nature Conservancy will work alongside Marshall Islands Conservation Society, Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority and other key stakeholders and partners to enhance management of coral reef fisheries and resilience of coral reef ecosystems by building local capacity to develop robust evidence-based harvest strategies that contribute to economic prosperity, food security and healthy reefs.

The Pacific BioScapes Programme is supporting public awareness for sea turtle protection in Papua New Guinea. The protection of sea turtles in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is an ongoing issue. The PNG Conservation and Environment Protection Authority will be assisted to raise awareness of the threats to sea turtle species in Papua New Guinea through a major turtle protection public awareness campaign.
