"The implementation plan of the UN decade of Ocean science for Sustainable development (the ocean decade) calls for 'transformative science' and a 'revolution in how that science is produced, used and disseminated'. The dicussion note for this report aims to address this in a holistic manner, It was inspired by dicussions held during a series global and regional webinars in late 2020 that brough together 2100 individuals from around the world to bring to life the notion collaborative, co-designed science and identify the key obstacles challenges and opportunities.

In our last newsletter we launched our fundraising campaign for the Suwarrow rat eradication. This campaigns seeks to raise $50,000NZD to fund a crew to return to Suwarrow atoll to eradicate the last of the kiore or polynesian rats (rattus exulans) that we recently found on Motu Kena.You can read more about this campaign on our TIS webpage.

As its name tells, CEARAC mainly conducts various monitoring and assessment of the marine and coastal environment of the NOWPAP region with special monitoring methodologies and tools such as remote sensing. Prolonged worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has restricted people's life and travel all through the year of 2021, and it was inevitable for CEARAC to meet people online. The training course is designed to provide its trainees with both lectures and hands-on sessions of data processing with computer tools, and CEARAC organized it virtually for the first time.

La Niña continues in the tropical Pacific with climate models suggest La Niña will persist until March 2022. The current Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) pulse is moderate to strong and is expected to remain in this region over the next week or two. The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) was active over the western warm pool region and eastern Pacific with a shift to the north from its normal position, while the South Pacific Conver-gence Zone (SPCZ) was active and shifted southwest around New Caledonia, Vanuatu to New Zealand.
