Pacific Island countries and territories (PICs) comprise vast land mad marine ecosystems. Much of the world's biodiversity is located in the region. Pacific Islands people and cultures are connected through the Pacific Ocean, which is larger than all of the planet's land area combined.

A key message highlighted during the meeting include the urgent need for regional collaboration on managing, sharing utilising and delivering climate change and disaster risk data and information to inform reporting and decision-making.

Indigenous people and local communities (IPLCs) are the holders of a vast amount of traditional knowledge of the ocean and its resources.

This is a waste deposit/levy system sheet which is defined as an economic instrument that can assist in sustainably financing waste management. It is a small deposit that is added to the import or sale of the product. This deposit is refunded to the consumer when returned for recycling. A way to create a shared responsibility for the management of waste with both the importer and consumer, can also retained a portion of the deposit and any unredeemed deposits, are used to fund the recovery, recycling and off-shore shipping of the product.

This study provides the first detailed investigation of the catches of the shark longline fishery in Papua New Guinea. Fisheries observes collected data on shark catches from a total of 318 longline sets between May and June 2014, before it s closure in July 2014. In all, 14694 sharks were recorded with a total estimated biomass of 439 tonnes (Mg). Eighteen species of sharks were recorded in the observer data, with the most dominant species being Carcharhinus falciformis which constituted more than 90% of the total catches by both weight and number of individuals.

Positive relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) highlight the importance of conserving biodiversity to maintain key ecosystem functions and associated services. Although natural systems are rapidly losing biodiversity due to numerous of human-caused stressors, our understanding of how multiple stressors influence the BEF relationships comes largely from small experimental studies.
