The Republic of Palau is the westernmost archipelago in the Caroline Islands of Micronesia. The curved archipelago is comprised of approximately 450 islands of which only eight are continuously inhabited. It lies to the north of Papua New Guinea, and to the east of the Philippines. The Republic has jurisdiction over territorial sea to 3 nautical miles offshore, an Exclusive Fishery Zone (3 to 12 nautical miles offshore), and an Exclusive Economic Zone 12-200 nautical miles offshore, encompassing 237,830 square miles.

The development of a 'standard' task list against which Members' current levels of knowledge and skills were assessed, was extremely useful not only in enabling data gathering and comparison but also in serving as a training tool in and of itself, because it enlightened Member participants on the range of tasks involved in the different environmental fields. Most importantly it highlighted that most jobs held a diverse array of knowledge and skills that current SPREP training does not adequately fulfil, particularly those of conservation practitioners and meteorological staff.

Mangroves are amazing trees which live half-way between the land and sea. Unlike other plants mangroves grow with their roots in an alternating environment of sea water and freshwater runoff from the land.
