The small economies and populations of the Pacific islands have very limited financial capacity, yet are stewards for an immense area of ocean and its associated global ecosystem services

One of the key deliverables of the Forum Compact is to track the progress of Forum island countries (FICs) towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which is the main purpose of this report. The MDGs assessment in this report is not strictly made the global targets, as the assessments are contextualised to country realities and supplemented by proxy data and qualitative information.

The 16th Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation Annual Meeting was convened in Suva, Fiji from 13th to 14th August and the meeting as an extraordinary annual meeting to specifically prepare for the upcoming 9th Pacific Islands Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areasto discuss and make decisions on PIRT support to the conference. Provide PIRT members and partners an update of the conference update in relation to conference agenda, support by the Fijian Government on conference logistics, special events such as environmental awards and high level meeting. PIRT members and partners to make decisions on the following PIRT related agendas; (i) selection process of new chair, (ii) hosting of PIRT secretariat, (iii) annual membership sponsorship, (iv) PIRT annual meetings and (iv) role of PIRT in the next conference.

This workshop delivered on the 'Capacity building, education and training' output of the 'Turtle Monitoring and Eco-tourism Development' project, which is being funded by the New Zealand AID Programme and delivered in partnership with the NZ Department of Conservation. The project will be implemented in four Pacific Island countries, and Fiji is the first to initiate activities.

The Pacific Climate Change Finance Assessment Framework (PCCFAF) has been developed in response to the need to approach climate change financing in an informed way, commensurate with the specific circumstances and challenges of FICs. While existing global approaches are being developed and trialled, they do not always consider aspects that are particularly relevant to the situation of small island developing states. Rather than developing a parallel framework the PCCFAFblends Pacific relevant aspects, especially climate change sources and capacity, into existing assessment approaches. This approach has emanated from, and has been piloted and refined through a case study of Nauru.

The Work Programme and Budget (WP&B) is prepared in accordance with the requirements of the SPREP Financial Regulations and is expressed in USD. The Secretariat proposes a balanced budget of anticipated income and expenditure of USD$22,143,286. The format for the 2014 WP & B is aligned to the priorities of the new Strategic Plan 2011-2015. However, it maintains features of the SPREP budget summary format which lists the budget for each target and links the sources of funding to the core and programme budget components.
