In the Cook Islands, the Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change (PACC) project focuses on coastal zone management on Mangaia Island. The project is helping to ‘climate-proof’ coastal development, and to develop an integrated coastal management policy and plan for Mangaia

On all islands in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) rainwater is the primary source of freshwater, putting the country at high risk from droughts. The water sector was therefore chosen by the RMI Government to benefit from the PACC project, and the project has been working since 2008 to increase the country’s resilience to drought events. This report details the process undertaken in the PACC demonstration project, to design and implement various measures to enhance Majuro’s water reticulation system.

To acknowledge the waste management and a serious issue which is of concern to the region, especially hazardous wastes such as E-waste and Asbestos as well as solid wastes, specifically Recyclables. As the European Union is funding this project, this meeting also endorsed several items related to the governance of the project which were discussed by the committee members after an update on the teams'activity. The SPREP team has commenced discussions with countries on national project investments and delivering activities which will improve data collection and sharing, assess legal frameworks and waste policies, develop structured education and awareness initiatives, enhance private sector engagement, and build capacity to deliver sound environmental waste management practices across the Pacific.

This is a waste deposit/levy system sheet which is defined as an economic instrument that can assist in sustainably financing waste management. It is a small deposit that is added to the import or sale of the product. This deposit is refunded to the consumer when returned for recycling. A way to create a shared responsibility for the management of waste with both the importer and consumer, can also retained a portion of the deposit and any unredeemed deposits, are used to fund the recovery, recycling and off-shore shipping of the product.

Pacific island countries are increasingly exposed to series of environmental hazards that threaten the health of the Pacific islands communities and its natural environment. Climate change tops the list of big issues across all island groups, while local environment battles are being waged over deforestation, land and sea mining, urban migration, infrastructure deelopment and population growth. These brings with its environmental issues such as waste pollution, invasive species, unsafe water, poor sanitation, air pollution, hazardous chemicals and occupational hazards which contributes to poor livelihood.

As reflected in the Bluer Pacific Vision the Ocean is an integral part of the lives and future of the Pacific region. As we are all aware, the recent COVID-19 has been a very challenging time in many ways. While the Pacific region has largely been spared much of the tragedy due to decisive action by Governments, the economies of the region will be hit hard by this event.
