Rodent Control Manual : A Practical Guide for Rodent Control for Communities and Technicians Working in Samoa

The purpose o the manual is provide practical guidance to technicians attempting to plan and control rodents (rats and mice) using poison baiting for biodiversity conservation purposes under Samoan forest conditions. The methodology outlined in this manual is the result of efforts to assess the effectiveness of using rodent bait at the Malololelei Recreation reserve since 2017.

The tropical Marquesas islands are characterised by their isolation and high levels of endemicity among native fauna and flora. This includes forty-two percent of the 320 native vascular plants and a diverse terrestrial snail community, with at least 78 species represented. Of the 12 native land birds 11 occur only within the archipelago, several restricted to a single island. Nineteen species of seabird breed there including the most eastern population of the Endangered Phoenix Petrel. Monitoring of seabirds and other species before, during and after the project will inform the impact of removing rats from these islets including how endangered species respond and community interest.

We have prepared this report following a call for information about the herbicide glyphosate, issued by the EPA between April and October 2021. This call for information was carried out in recognition of the many concerns that surround glyphosate, whether they be concerns about its possible impact on human health and the environment or concerns about the effects of glyphosate being unavailable on agriculture and the larger economy. The use of glyphosate is a divisive topic, and unsurprisingly, we received a wide range of comments around glyphosate use in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Pitcairn Island Desktop study on invasive alien species

This desktop study is focused on presenting known and available baseline data on alien and invasive species and key biodiversity of Pitcairn which will inform stakeholders during the development of the Territorial Invasive Species Strategy and Action Plan (TISSAP). It delivers annotated inventories of (i) invasive alien species by island, invasiveness and habitat including risk assessment ranking; (ii) key endemic and threatened species at island and site level; (iii) designated natural areas and ecosystems with notes on threat/pressures on these areas; (iv) An annotated inventory of at-risk invasive species in neighboring countries with pathways of introduction and dispersal and (v) invasive species prevention, management/control related projects undertaken on Pitcairn and on-going initiatives.

Samoa is highly exposed to natural hazards such as tropical cyclones, earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts, and floods. These damage economic growth and impact debt sustainability adversely. Increasing frequency and intensity of coastal storms are likely to amplify damage to infrastructure and livelihoods. Slow-moving climate stresses such as sea level rise and increasing heat hazard are also likely to impact potential growth in the main economic sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and tourism.
