Mass coral bleaching of the scale following the 1998 El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event is viewed by some as an intractable problem and by others as a challenge we need to do "something"about. Patterns of bleaching in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary show that each subsequent event has exceeded former thresholds of resistance and extended bleaching to new reefs. This is a matter of concern that increases the stakes and warns us that we cannot wait any longer to act. Responding to rising global concern, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) joined with the World Wildlife Fund U.S.(WWF-US) to determine how to shape the "something" into practical actions that could be implemented to mitigate the impacts of bleaching on coral reef biodiversity.

The Seventh Meeting of the Regional Meteorological Services Directors (RMSD) was convened by SPREP to advance regional collaboration in meteorology, climate services, and disaster risk reduction. Opening remarks by officials from SPREP, WMO, and the Government of Samoa emphasized the critical role of National Meteorological Services (NMSs) in supporting climate resilience and sustainable development across the Pacific. Key outcomes included reflections on the evolution of RMSD since 1993, the strategic importance of the 2000 Needs Analysis, and discussions on integrating meteorological services with broader policy frameworks, such as those informed by the IPCC and GCOS. The meeting reaffirmed commitments to regional cooperation, sustainable resourcing, and implementation of the Strategic Plan, while addressing challenges faced by under-resourced NMSs. A new chairperson from Samoa was elected, and the session reviewed prior recommendations to ensure continuity and effectiveness in service delivery.

On low lying coral islands, potable water is commonly sourced from shallow, fresh groundwater lenses. Although rainwater is also collected in tanks in the wet periods, dependence on the lense for all water needs becomes critical in dry periods. Protecting the groundwater from pollution is a major concern. In the management of reticulated supplies private land is sometimes converted to a public reserve to restrict access and use in an attempt to ensure that groundwater is protected from surface contaminants. Usually this is achieved by a lease agreement between landholders and the government utility and this arrangement can be politically, socially and economically contentious. However in the village context where private wells are still used by landholders, control of pollution sources is more practically complex, while still raising many sociocultural considerations. The arcid bivalve Anadara uropigimelana (te bun) is the most important shellfish resource in the central atolls of Tungaru (former Gilbert Islands), with a yearly catch of ca. 1400 tons on South Tarawa alone. Species of Anadara s.s. are also important in artisanal shellfisheries on several central Pacific islands. Tungaru atolls lying in the highly productive zone of equatorial upwelling harbor dense te bun beds, while those occurring outside this zone have fewer Anadara. Te bun are abundant in seagrass beds, lagoonal shoals, and shallow-lagoon bottoms. They reproduce year round with a lunar spawning periodicity. Size frequency data and observations on the occurrence of small juveniles indicate that, despite frequent reproduction, there is high spatio-temporal variation in recruitment within the Tarawa lagoon. One massive recruitment event in 1993 opened a novel fishery in Bonriki village, where no te bun were available for two decades previously. Highly variable recruitment, as well as changes in the extent of seagrass habitats, may explain marked historical fluctuations in the abundance of this important resource.

Mangrove is a type of forest growing along tidal mudflats and along shallow water coastal areas extending inland along rivers, streams and their tributaries where the water is generally brackish. The mangrove ecosystem is dominated by mangrove trees as the primary producer interacting with associated aquatic fauna, social and physical factors of the coastal environment.
