Seagrasses are marine flowering plants that are found in shallow waters in many parts of the world, from tropics to the Artic circle. Seagrass meadows are of fundamental importance to the world fisheries production, providing valuable nursery habitat to over one fifth of the world's largest 25 fisheries as well as shelter and food for thousands of species, including fish, shellfish and threatened and endangered and charismatic species.

The workshop is a component of the project on dugong research and conservation Pacific Islands region.

Local communities and indigenous people make substantial contributions to global conservation efforts and sustainable development. While these communities are often the primary resource stewards who rely on ecosystem to meet food security, livelihood and health needs, their contribution to the achievement of global conservation targets have not yet been fully recognized.

The target 11 addresses the value of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures as proven, vital and cost-effective nature-based strategies not only for conserving biodiversity.
