The workshop was planned and organized by a steering group consisting of R.L. Brownell Jr., R.R. Reeves. N.J. Gales and W.F. Perrin (see Annex 1 for a list of participants). Brownell handled logistics and Reeves chaired the meeting in Samoa. Financial support was provided by WWF (International). The Ocean Conservancy, Animal Welfare Institute. Humane Society of the United States. Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. U.S. Marine Mammal Commission and U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The workshop was hosted by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

The Pacific Climate Change Round table (PCCR) was held from 14 to 17 October 2008, at the National University of Samoa (NUS) Gymnasium in Apia. The Government of Switzerland funded the PCCR, while funding for the preparation of the Action Plan for the Pacific Islands Framework for Action on Climate Change came from New Zealand’s International Aid and Development Agency (NZAid). The PCCR was organized by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) in cooperation with the Council of Regional Organizations in the Pacific (CROP) and national climate change focal points, and SPREP acted as Secretariat for the PCCR. The Government of Samoa provided significant logistical assistance

Assessment of humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) watching activities in Vava'u, Tonga : pilot study

Whale-watching has recently developed into an important industry within the South Pacific islands region (Economists @ Large & Associates. 2008a). In particular, the presence of humpback whales at high latitudes during the winter months has become of great interest over the last 10 years (Schaffar and Garrigue. 2007). In the Kingdom of Tonga, whale-watching activities began in 1994 and focus on a small population of humpback whales utilising the waters around Vava'u as their main breeding ground between the months of July and October. The whale-watching industry in Tonga is unique as it is one of the only countries worldwide to actively promote swimming with humpback whales.

The survey forms used to record data and information for turtle track/nests and nesting turtle surveys were developed before the start of the project. These forms were further refined in consultation with the Tonga Departments concerned during the in-country training prior to the conduct of the initial surveys. In addition to forms for recording data, guidelines were also developed to help in the conduct of the surveys and in marine turtle species identification.

This guide provides essential information to better understand the role of marine protected area networks to achieve marine conservation. It utilizes current scientific knowledge, institutional experience and global case studies to present the most relevant lessons in building resilient and functional networks. An important feature is the balance among social, economic, legal and ecological considerations, which collectively contribute to management decisions. The tested techniques will be extremely useful for practitioners, managers and field staff in designing and implementing effective marine protected area networks that are resilient to human and environmental threats.

The Pacific Invasives Initiative (PII) is a sister partnership based at Auckland University which shares 6 partners with PILN. The goal of the PII is to contribute to conserving island biodiversity and enhancing the sustainability of island livelihoods by minimizing the spread and impacts of invasive species in the Pacific region. This is achieved by increasing support and developing capacity in the region for managing the impacts of these species. It works with Pacific agencies/organisations to increase their support for invasive species management and develop their capacity to take effective action against their priority invasive species problems. These outcomes are achieved through facilitation of Demonstration Projects, provision of technical support and advice, provision of training and facilitation of skills exchanges.

Work is based around country visits by the network coordinator to support PILN teams to identify and take strategic action to manage their priority invasive species. The network is functioning by sharing awareness of successful activities being earned out by the teams, providing the mechanism for other teams to do the same, and actively encouraging them to do so. Capacity building is linked to on-going invasive species projects and achieved through workshops and exchanges.
