This workshop delivered on the 'Capacity building, education and training' output of the 'Turtle Monitoring and Eco-tourism Development' project, which is being funded by the New Zealand AID Programme and delivered in partnership with the NZ Department of Conservation. The project will be implemented in four Pacific Island countries, and Fiji is the first to initiate activities.

A BIORAP is a biological inventory programme undertaken in marine and terrestrial environments, and is designed to rapidly assess the biodiversity of highly diverse areas. Options to manage threats and protect some remaining examples of indigenous biodiversity of national or international significance are recommended to governing communities.

The objective of the project was improved conservation status of priority threatened species, consistent with selected outcomes set out in the Island Biodiversity Programme of Work (IBPOW). Surveys were initially aimed at establishing the status of species at different sites in the Vava'u Group, Niuafo’ou, Late and Fonualei to assess fate of introduced populations of Tongan Megapode. However cancellation of flights to Niaufo’ou resulted in work here being deferred.

This study objective is to produce the economic valuation of mangrove ecosystem services in Vanuatu.
